Versa Evacuation Chair

The Versa is manufactured by Exitmaster and distributed in Ireland by Phoenix STS (Safety Equipment Ireland), the fire safety and health and safety consultancy and training provider.

The Versa is Exitmaster's flagship evacuation chair: an upright, four wheel stair descent chair that lets one trained operator bring a person with impaired mobility down stairs and out of the building when the lifts cannot be used. It stores flat against the wall on its mounting bracket and deploys in seconds when needed.

The patented Stoop-free and Free-walk design keeps the operator walking upright and in full control on the stairs, so a single operator can load the passenger and travel without waiting for help. A large footrest supports the passenger, and a top step safety feature steadies the chair as it enters the flight. The design is protected by European and international patents and registered designs.

Evacuation chairs of this type are fitted in offices, schools, hotels, healthcare buildings and public buildings, anywhere stairs form part of the escape route. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must plan how everyone on the premises will escape in an emergency, including people who cannot manage stairs unaided. In plain terms, if anyone in your building needs help on the stairs, you need suitable equipment in place, trained operators, and usually a personal emergency evacuation plan (PEEP) recording who does what.
