Ski Sled

The Ski Sled has been designed for use in confined areas, where space is limited, such as congested hospital wards and buildings with narrow corridors or single width fire doors. The Ski Sled is easily removed from its wall-mounted wipe clean storage bag in an emergency by pulling the velcro flap.

It is ideally suited for a patient/resident or immobile person with a high body mass, with a manufacturer’s recommended maximum load of 120kg – with a minimum of 2 rescuers or 160kg – with a minimum of 3 rescuers.

The Ski Sled has a safe load-tested weight of up to 240kg, which is considerably higher than similar products currently on the market. It would be best to liaise with your manual handling advisor about forming a policy on how many staff should be available to use this product.

The occupant is transferred to the Ski Sled by rolling them to their side, placing the Ski Sled beneath them and the mattress (if on a bed) then rolling them back onto the Ski Sled, wrapped in their bedding and secured with the 3 seat belt style straps and can then be quickly pulled to safety.

The foam pad and the internal nylon support struts give protection to the occupant from bumps and bruises; it is ideal for use in nursing homes or hospitals and many other environments such as schools, offices, hotels etc.

The tough, slippery base material enables the occupant to be moved easily over virtually any surface; indoors or outdoors. The narrow width and flexibility allow the occupant to be slid through standard doorways, along twisting corridors and down narrow stairs.

Note:

• Beware of imitations or equipment that has not received third party certification; you cannot afford your evacuation aid to fail when in use.
• The genuine Ski Sled is fitted with seatbelt style IMMI buckles.
• When considering the selection of an evacuation aid, it is also essential to determine the particular risks that staff may encounter utilising such equipment.
• This includes pulling handles that are too short for staff to move safely, particularly when descending stairs.
• Another critical element of an evacuation aid is its construction method; you need to be confident that the device you have chosen is robust, and offers protection to the patient or resident when they are being evacuated.

Since the changes to the Fire Services Act 1981 in 2003, the Fire Service is no longer obliged to provide a “complete evacuation service” for premises, thus placing the onus upon the business owner and changes in the ‘Disability Act’ – which now states that everyone must have the same right of evacuation in an emergency.
