Fireco Dorgard and wireless fire door retention devices that hold fire doors open legally and release them on alarm activation. Wedged-open fire doors are among the most common findings in Irish fire safety inspections — retention devices solve the problem without compromising compartmentation. Our fire engineers advise on suitability for your alarm category under I.S. 3218, and fire door inspection training is available through Phoenix STS.

Why fire doors should never be wedged open
A fire door only protects people when it is closed. A wedge or prop keeps it open during a fire, letting smoke and flame spread. The Fire Services Acts 1981 and 2003 place a general duty on those in control of premises to take reasonable measures to guard against the outbreak of fire and to ensure the safety of people on the premises. In plain terms, a wedged-open fire door is a fire spread risk that the person in control of the building is responsible for removing.
A fire door holder holds the door open for daily traffic and releases it to close automatically when the fire alarm activates.
Where fire door holders are used
Offices, schools and commercial buildings use holders on busy corridor doors. Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005, employers must provide and maintain a safe workplace, including safe means of escape. In practice, a heavily used fire door needs a compliant way to stay open during the day rather than an unofficial wedge. See our school safety equipment and commercial building safety equipment ranges.
Nursing homes and hospitals rely on holders even more, because residents using walking frames, wheelchairs and hoists need doors that do not fight back. In designated centres for older people, Regulation 28 of S.I. No. 415 of 2013 requires registered providers to take adequate precautions against the risk of fire and to make adequate arrangements for containing and extinguishing fires. In practice, corridor and bedroom fire doors must close reliably when the alarm sounds while staying easy to move through for the rest of the day. See our nursing home safety equipment and hospital safety equipment pages.
How to choose a fire door holder
Acoustic holders are the quickest to deploy. Dorgard fits to the bottom of the door in under five minutes with no wiring and releases the door when it hears a continuous fire alarm of 14 seconds or more. Dorgard SmartSound adds noise-filtering technology for more accurate sound recognition.
Panel-connected systems suit noisy or high-risk areas such as kitchens, stairwells and busy corridors. In the Fireco Pro range, Dorgard Pro and DorMag Pro are radio activated by ProHub, a controller wired directly to the fire alarm panel, so background noise cannot interfere with a release.
Free-swing closers solve a different problem: heavy doors. Freedor SmartSound lets the door swing freely and rest at any angle, then closes it on the sound of the alarm. It suits settings where residents or pupils struggle with standard fire doors.

Fire door inspections to match
Holders are only one part of fire door compliance. Gaps, seals, hinges and closers all need to be right, and that is a Phoenix STS specialism. Our consultancy team carries out fire door inspections across Ireland, so you can arrange equipment and an independent check of the doors in one conversation.
Fire door holder FAQs
Is it legal to hold a fire door open?
Yes, when the door is held by a device that releases it to close automatically on activation of the fire alarm. Wedges, hooks and propped extinguishers are not compliant, because they keep the door open during a fire.
Who is responsible for fire doors in a building?
The person in control of the premises: typically the employer, building owner, facilities manager or registered provider.
How do I choose between Dorgard and the Pro range?
Dorgard and Dorgard SmartSound are acoustic and wire-free, quick to fit and suited to most buildings. The Pro range works through ProHub, wired to the fire alarm panel and activating units by radio, which is better for noisy areas, kitchens and sites that want central monitoring of every door.
Do fire door holders need an electrician?
Dorgard and Dorgard SmartSound do not; they are wire-free and fit to the door in minutes. A Pro range installation needs ProHub connected to the fire alarm panel, normally arranged with your fire alarm contractor.
What details help with a fire door holder quotation?
The number of doors, the building type, where the doors are located, the fire alarm arrangement and any product names you already have in mind. For several buildings or sites, a door schedule lets the team quote the whole job together.
