The Patient Handling Manikin was developed with NHS moving and handling professionals and hospital manual handling coordinators to do one job well: teach carers to move patients in ways that protect the carer's back and the patient's dignity. Musculoskeletal injury rates in healthcare are statistically higher than in most other industries, and documented, regular training also helps protect a provider if a patient injury claim ever arises.
An elongated plastic spine lets the manikin sit upright in a bed, wheelchair or hoist, behaving like a conscious patient, while plastic strips in the thighs prevent too much bend when hoisting. The arms and legs detach at the shoulder and knee, so trainers can simulate an amputee or simply lighten the manikin for transport between sites. Extra weight in the seat means it sits properly in a sling, chair or wheelchair, Velcro wrist straps let trainers position the arms, soft body joints protect handlers, and the neck accepts an immobilisation collar. It is supplied undressed, so you can dress it in pyjamas or day clothes to match each scenario.
Two models are available. The 50kg is the recommended industry standard: the most realistic weight, performing best without adaptations, and supplied with weighted feet. The 30kg is lighter to handle and comes with both weighted boots, with extra grip on the soles, for bed and wheelchair work, and unweighted soft feet for sling and hoist work.
The fabric is the same flame retardant material used in police ballistic and stab vests, conforming to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, BS EN ISO 12947-2 and BS EN ISO 14116:2008. It is tough, safe to handle and easy to clean.
The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires employers to provide instruction and training for tasks that put workers at risk, and patient moving is among the highest risk manual handling tasks in any care setting.
