Obesity is a very real problem in the UK and across the world and judging by government figures and anecdotal evidence, the problem is rapidly getting worse.
All sectorsas well as Fire and Rescue, Hospitals, Ambulance can experience heavier casualties.
But positioning a full-sized and full-weight bariatric manikin can be difficult depending on the training. We are therefore pleased to offer a new solution for Bariatric Training.
In addition to the Ruth Lee Bariatric manikins, you can now purchase a Water-fillable suit which converts any adult Duty Range manikin into a Bariatric!
This is a new addition to the Ruth Lee Bariatric range and allows customers to place a manikin in situ before adding the weight. It is the perfect choice where space is limited or when there are not enough people to position a full-weight bariatric manikin in place ready for training.
The Water-Fillable Bariatric Suit comes as a complete kit including soft feet, plus all adapters and two short hoses for filling. A water flow meter is also included and allows you to monitor how much water is being added. This comes complete in a sturdy bag for easy carrying and storage.
Features
- Specially designed suit converts any adult Ruth Lee Duty Range manikin into a Bariatric.
- design allows one person to carry the equipment needed and position the ‘manikin’ in place.
- The suit is constructed from an extremely high specification Trilaminate of Cordura /Butyl/ Polyester fabric. This combination makes it fully waterproof, but more importantly, very hard-wearing and flexible.
- All seams are triple-stitched and taped by hand with 38 mm Aquatape for extra security against leakage.
- British manufactured and handmade.
- Due to the material used in construction, we do not recommend dragging the manikin across rough surfaces once it is wearing the suit - at all times, it should be moved using a bariatric carry sheet.
- The weight of the complete manikin will depend on the dummy you place the suit on. Up to 150kg of additional weight can be added using water (i.e. if you place the suit on a 30kg manikin, the total weight of the bariatric will be 180kg once the suit and water is added). The water flow meter records to the weight in litres - 1 litre of water equals 1kg of additional weight.
- The Suit when empty is approximately 5kg, and when placed in the bag for transportation with the adapters weighs around 7kg.
- Once filled, these manikins are designed to be carried by a team of at least 4-6 people.
- Ruth Lee has advised that Carry Sheets are no longer available as standalone Ruth Lee products. For this conversion suit, ask Safety Equipment Ireland to confirm the correct current carry-sheet option for your training setup when requesting a quotation.
- Comes complete with soft boots, all adapters, a water flow meter and carrying holdall.
- The suit is constructed from an extremely high specification Trilaminate of Cordura /Butyl/ Polyester fabric. This combination makes it fully waterproof, but more importantly, very hard-wearing and flexible.

The Bariatric Conversion Suit is a specialized training aid designed to simulate the size, shape, and mobility challenges of a bariatric (obese) individual. This wearable suit is used in medical, rescue, and care training environments to help responders and caregivers develop the skills and awareness needed for safely assisting bariatric patients. The suit can be worn over standard clothing or on a manikin to replicate increased body mass, altered body shape, and restricted movement. It is ideal for teaching patient handling, transport techniques, and emergency extraction procedures in realistic conditions. Key Features: Realistic Body Mass Simulation: Adds significant bulk and weight to mimic a patient weighing up to 350–400+ lbs (160–180+ kg), depending on suit configuration. Adjustable Fit: Designed to accommodate various body types and be worn by different users or fitted onto training manikins. Mobility Restriction Elements: Mimics decreased range of motion, reduced agility, and other mobility limitations commonly associated with obesity. Durable Construction: Made from high-strength, breathable, and easy-to-clean materials for repeated use in demanding training scenarios. Optional Weighted Inserts: Add further realism with internal weights to increase training difficulty and resistance during lifting or repositioning. The Suit weighs approximately 5kg when empty and around 7 kg when placed in the bag for transportation with the adapters. Once filled, these manikins are designed to be carried by a team of at least 4-6 people. Who Uses Them? This product is ideal for anyone who performs or delivers bariatric training, whether as a rescue or from a general patient handling perspective.
